The University of Pretoria (UP) is a seven-campus public university. UP offers a high quality of teaching, learning and research expertise across all nine faculties, including South Africa’s only Faculty of Veterinary Science, and Africa’s top Faculty of Law and business school. UP hosts the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Food Systems (formerly ACoE in Food Security) which aims to create an engaging global network of talented researchers to move institutions forward in finding solutions to the food security and nutritional challenges in Africa.

Wanda Markotter
Prof. Wanda Markotter is the Director of the Centre for Viral Zoonoses, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria. She occupies two research chairs; DSI-NRF South African Research Chair in "Infectious Diseases of Animals " (Zoonoses) and a chair in People, Health and Places at the Future Africa Institute. Her interdisciplinary research programme focusing on bat pathogens and the risk of spill over in Africa. In 2021 she was appointed as the co-chair of the One Health High Level expert panel (OHHLEP) advising the WHO, WOAH, FAO and UNEP.
